Cottier Owners, Little Takes and Peasant Properties A Reprint of 'Jottings in France, Germany and Switzerland' by Lady Verney. Lady Verney was Florence Nightingale's sister. On the page opposite the inside cover is handwritten, ''F. Nightingale''. Florence Nightingale was known to have given gifts to some of the probationers in the Nightingale Training School. Jane Styring was one of those probationers who went on to become the Matron of Paddington Infirmary and eventually settled in Canada.

The American Journal of Nursing, September, 1910 issue announced the death of Florence Nightingale in the editorial. The editorial begins with her frailty and having been an invalid for many years and does go on to mention the broad influence she had over health care reform in hospitals, nursing and the military. The detail about her life and death was printed in the October, 1920 issue.

Biographies of seven men and women with great physical and spiritual courage- Florenc eNightingale, Father Damien, George Washington Carver, Jane Addams, Wlfred Grenfell, Mahatma Gandhi, and Albert Schweitzer. First edition signed by the author. One of 13 signed first editions.

Book owned by William Edward Nightingale: ''Collezione di Tuttti I Poemi in Lingua Napoletana'' (''Collection of all the Poems in the Neapolitan lanaguage''). [Neapolitan is an Italian dialect]. ''Tomo Decimoterzo, 1786''. The hand written inscription reads, ''Gift of the family of Wm. Shore Nightingale 1923.'' William Edward Nightingale (W.E.N.) was Florence Nightingale's father. He was well educated, articulate and was said to speak Italian like a native. Unlike most upper class, wealthy English gentlemen, he home schooled his daughters, providing them with an education that far exceeded that of the upper class female child. The education he provided probably had much to do with his daughter Florence's interest in a myriad of subjects but, more than anything else, it most likely provided her with the political savvy she used so well to instigate change in sanitary law and policy at the highest levels.

The Crimean Commission and the Chelsea Board: A Review of the Proceeding and Report of the Board Colonel Sir Alexander Tulloch, K.C.B. 2nd ed. 1880. In large part because of public indignation regarding the treatment of soldiers, Colonel Alexander Tulloch and Sir John McNeil were sent to the Crimea to study the commissariat, and in particular, the failure of the supply systems during the Crimean war. The report, first published in 1856, was critical and ultimately led to reform a few years later, but only after all senior officers named in the report had been exonerated. The exonerations had much to do with the generals sat on the Chelsea board. The lack of supplies and/or inability to access them, because of the lack of coordination and blind adherence to rule over logic, was a major impediment about which Nightingale voiced much concern. It appeared regularly on her list of complaints. She was not alone in her assessments. Sidney Osborne, a wealthy chaplain who volunteered in the Crimea, wrote extensively about the administrative inefficiency in his book Scutari and Its Hospitals.

The Crimean Journals of the Sisters of Mercy 1854-56'' written in 2004, by Maria Luddy was compiled from the diaries of two sisters and the mother superior of a group of 15 Sisters of Mercy who were sent to the Crimea by Sidney Herbert in December, 1854. Based on information Herbert received from Charles Bracebridge, who went to the Crimea with his wife to assist Nightingale, the sisters were sent along with others without the consent or knowledge of Miss Nightingale. Miss Nightingale, who was angered by Herbert's decision to send more nurses, was cold and unfriendly towards the nurses and immediately got into a power struggle with the Sisters of Mercy's superior Mother Mary Bridgeman. Bridgeman refused to have her sisters nurse under the direction of Miss Nightingale nor would consent to her sisters being supervised by Mother Moore, the superior of the original six Sisters of Mercy who accompanied Nightingale to the Crimea. Unlike the Bermondsey sisters, those who were under the direction of Mother Bridgeman did not like nor trust Nightingale and, in addition to not getting along with Nightingale, Mother Bridgeman did not like or get along with Mother Moore. Bridgeman formed alliances with the Catholic clergy and some of the doctors, but especially with Dr. John Hall, who was the officer in charge of the medical establishment in the Crimea and who disliked Nightingale, believing she was a nuisance and a spy for the government. During most of the time the Bridgeman nuns were in the Crimea, they served in hospitals apart from Nightingale, although their paths crossed on occasion. Ultimately, to keep from working under the direction of Nightingale, Bridgeman and her sisters returned to Ireland. Another major issue that was addressed in the diaries of the sisters was the difficulty of the sisters having to work with the lay nurses. These books provide a good overview of religious sisters in the Crimea as well as insight regarding the state of Catholicism in Victorian England.

Florence Nightingale believed that one of the major causes of illness in the soldiers was the lack of good nutrition, and the descriptions of food served to the soldiers, from a variety of sources, confirms that the food was of poor quality, lacking in variety and often prepared in a way that made consumption impossible. When it was available, the meat was underprepared and often raw on the bone. The kitchens lacked the stoves and ovens, and utensils were scarce. Food and other goods were locked behind an impossible trail of bureaucracy that began in England and extended into the darkest corners of the Crimea. The lack of organization and coordination was compounded by the lack of trained cooks, leaving the preparation of food to mostly low ranking soldiers who were victims of the brutality of war. Alexis Soyer was a French chef who had worked in some of England's better dining establishments and who had built a reputation based on his knowledge of food and his culinary skill. He volunteered for the Crimea and his work was manifested in a great improvement in nutrition. Soyer improved the hospital kitchens and was able to do so economically. His account of time spent in the Crimea was documented in his book Culinary Campaign published in 1857. He makes reference to Florence Nightingale visiting the kitchens at Scutari with him and he gives an account of the time when she was very ill.

Drops of Water: Their Marvelous and Beautiful Inhabitants Displayed by the Microscope by Agnes Catlow, 1851. The printed book plate on the inside cover of the book reads, John Hall, SURGEON, &c., LEIGH. This book is believed to be from the library of the Dr. John Hall who was the chief medical officer of the British Army Medical Services. The book contains four hand painted colored plates. At age 63, Dr. Hall went to the Crimea from Bombay, India where he had been stationed. He was not in the Crimea from the start of the war, which meant that much of what he managed had already been put into place. His early report was of a rather positive nature and when he later encountered criticism, he became defensive and attributed the complaints about the conditions at Scutari were of a criticism of him than anything else. Hall was from the 'old school' so his assessments may have been in line with his experience with war. He was at first opposed to the use of chloroform as an anesthetic for surgery believing that it caused shock, but many of the younger surgeons, newly graduated from medical school, had prior experience with its use. Eventually the use of chloroform was widespread, especially with amputations. John Hall was Florence Nightingale's adversary. Besides believing that there was no place for female nurses in the care of soldiers, he also believed that she was a spy, reporting back to officials in England. Nightingale's relationship and ongoing communication with Sidney Herbert adds a level of truth to Hall's hypothesis. It's important to understand that, although there were most certainly problems, for the most part, Nightingale was in sympathy with most doctors believing that they too were victims of a bureaucratic nightmare.

Florence Nightingale often did her work through others. Harriet Martineau, a sociologist and noted writer, was given a copy of Nightingale's report on the mortality of the British army. She collaborated with Miss Nightingale and used the information from the report to write a book titled England and Her Soldiers in 1859. Although much of the content of the book is in fact the work of Florence Nightingale, there was an agreement between them that her name would not be associated with any of the material. Martineau instructed her publisher to have Florence Nightingale review the transcript for accuracy. Nightingale purchased and distributed copies of the book. The book was intended to draw attention to matters related to the war. The Coxcomb (pie chart) that Florence Nightingale is famous for developing is a fold-out at the beginning of the book and it shows the death rates of soldiers during the Crimean war. It provided a visual representation that was difficult to ignore. Florence Nightingale is credited for developing the pie chart and was the first woman to become a member of the Royal Statistical Society. She was among the first to gather statistics on health and sanitation.

Florence Nightingale by Lytton Strachey Lytton Strachey was the first of Nightingale's adversarial biographers. It was first published in 1918 in a book titled Eminent Victorians. Florence Nightingale and the Doctors by Zachary Cope was published in 1958.Florence Nightingale did most of her work through collaboration with others, especially with men who were knowledgeable and/or able to institute change politically. Dr. Farr was a medical statistician who worked very closely with Florence Nightingale advising her on how her information could best be presented in reports. He assisted her with compiling the statistics from the Crimea showing the death rates of soldiers by wounds inflicted from battle and much more so from disease. The deaths from diseases like Typhoid and Cholera were staggering.The book includes Nightingale's rapport with the doctors who lectured in the Nightingale Nursing training program, Dr. Whitfield who resigned under pressure and Dr. Croft who replaced Whitfield and worked closely and dutifully with Nightingale meeting her requirements for lectures to the probationers. He was accompanied by his son. This book provides a detailed description of the terrible conditions of the hospitals and the grossly lacking care of the soldiers. There are many references to Florence Nightingale throughout the book from the first time he met her through the end of his stay. He writes with great admiration for Nightingale and dispels the rumor that the Catholic nuns were attempting to convert soldiers. His most critical of comment is that Nightingale managed every detail, implying that she may have been ''overly controlling''. It is clear he recognized and appreciated her ability to manage an impossible situation. He also commented on the homely dresses of the nurses.
