BIOL 5503: Research Methods

Avoiding Plagiarism

When writing a research paper or research article, it is important to cite other people's ideas or research. In scientific writing, summarize the main points and ideas in your own words and avoid quotes, which are rarely used in scientific writing.

Quotes are rarely used in professional scientific writing. Paraphrasing by writing and summarizing information in your own words is more common and shows that you understand what you read.

Always cite ideas and information you got from other sources including when you paraphrase information.
